About us

Susan Stewart Smith
is a child, youth and adult certified yoga instructor, an early childhood education specialist and a child and youth nutrition and fitness consultant through CATCH Canada. Susan has spent over 15 years teaching and developing dynamic programs for various children and youth programs including National Capital Region YMCA-YWCA and DiscoverAbility Toronto.
Susan found yoga empowering for children and youth as they learn to move their bodies in ways they never considered and manage stressful situations just by using yoga breathing techniques.
I believe Yoga promotes, happiness and confidence, awareness of both body and mind, stilling the mind and focusing on one task at a time, gaining and maintaining flexibility, developing strength and coordination, learning the joys of exercise and good health in a relaxed and fun environment.”
Drawn to the creative, peaceful and heart opening aspects of yoga, Susan hopes that her passion for yoga is shared by the kids that she teaches. Her classes are playful, soothing, challenging, energetic, creative and soulful.

THE STEWdio
We beleieves that it’s important that children learn to relax, stretch and strengthen their bodies as well as their minds.

We believe that the benefits of teaching children to understand their bodies and still their minds at an early age cannot be overrated.

Children and Youth Yoga classes are designed to educate children in the practice of stretching and strengthening their bodies whilst giving them an understanding of correct posture and the skill of stillness. Teaching children to focus and release anxieties creates a strong foundation for life in this increasingly fast-paced world.

Yoga promotes:

happiness and confidence
awareness of both body and mind
stilling the mind and focusing on one task at a time
gaining and maintaining flexibility
developing strength and coordination
learning the joys of exercise and good health in a relaxed and fun environment.

What could be more healthy or worthwhile for a child than to develop a sense of self and an emotional connectedness at a young age?

What is Yoga?
"Yoga is the name given to an ancient practice that helps to create a sense of union in all aspects of ourselves; in body, mind and spirit. People have been practicing yoga for thousands of years in order to feel at peace with themselves. Moving your body into poses and exercises is the most commonly known form of yoga. In yoga you will become more aware of your breath and the inner workings of your body and mind. Yoga also helps you become healthier and happier by circulating vital life energy through all your body systems." (Source: "KISS Guide to Yoga", Shakta Kaur Khalsa)

Yoga for Kids?      YES
Why yoga for children? Fifteen years ago, that question was most likely asked about martial arts. Now there are classes for children at martial arts studios around every corner. And, like martial arts, yoga develops many wonderful qualities in children. Besides the obvious benefits of exercising the physical body, yoga sharpens the child’s ability to calm down and focus. It cultivates confidence and self-discipline. Many find that yoga, when practiced regularly, helps children become more aware of their thoughts and feelings. From this awareness, changes and growth in new and positive directions can blossom.(Source:“http://www.childrensyoga.com/TeachingTool/Articles.htm” )
Gisele’s passion for yoga and the love of working with children has inspired her to bring Yoga to the kids of Sudbury.
